Pierre-August Renoir, the gifted French Impressionist painter, struggled with the devastating effects of Rheumatoid Arthritis. The disease required Renoir to use a wheelchair and prompted him to create assistive devices so that he could continue to paint. It has been said that Renoir’s painting was always beautiful and optimistic— much like his view on life and his condition.

At National Rehabilitation Hospital, we understand that life can change in an instant. A once vibrant person who has suffered a sudden illness or injury can face months relearning the most basic of tasks. We see it every day, but like Renoir, we recognize the importance of hope and determination as people rebuild their lives.

Despite the physical challenges he faced, Renoir left a legacy of beauty and inspiration to the world through his art. So it is fitting that we honor our planned giving donors with membership in the Renoir Society, named in memory of the artist’s spirit.
