Clinical Studies

Attention and Memory Testing Study

Researchers at National Rehabilitation Hospital and Children’s National Medical Center are creating new computerized tests that may help doctors determine when a child has had a change in his or her thinking abilities. These tests may help children who have been injured in sports accidents, have medical conditions that may affect their brain, or are asked to take medications that may change their thinking abilities. This study will help us to develop a normative database and results of the assessment are available upon request.

To be eligible to participate, your child should be healthy and between the ages of 10 and 12. Your child will not be eligible for the study if they have a learning disability, a diagnosis of ADHD, or recently sustained a traumatic brain injury or concussion. Your child will receive a $5 gift for participating.

Keeping Stroke and TIA Patients Healthy

Would you like to prevent another stroke or heart attack from occurring? This study will test a new approach in preventing stroke or heart attacks in patients who have had a recent stroke or TIA. This involves taking a medication to reduce insulin resistance. Insulin resistance may lead to atherosclerosis, the blood vessel disease that causes most strokes. We are currently seeking participants for this study.

To be eligible to participate, you should:

  • be age 45 or older
  • not be on a diabetes medication
  • have had a recent stroke or TIA (within past 6 months)
  • be insulin resistant (by blood test)
  • not have any serious medical conditions such as heart failure or liver disease

Constraint Induced Therapy Study

Help us understand how cerebral palsy affects brain function. Take part in our study looking at brain function in children with cerebral palsy and how constraint induced therapy affects brain activity. Study participants will receive a comprehensive rehabilitation assessment, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the brain. motor learning studies, muscle reflex studies, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (tMRI). Children eligible for the therapy trial will be randomly assigned to receive either constraint induced therapy (CITx) or neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT). Evaluations will be completed over a week and the outpatient treatment study will last for three weeks. We need children who:

  • are between the ages of 8-17
  • have hemiplegic type cerebral palsy (affects only one side of the body)
  • do not suffer from a seizure disorder
  • have no serious cognitive impairments
  • do not have any serious medical problems
  • have not had surgery to treat muscle stiffness in the arm or hand
  • have some movement of their affected hand
  • live in the United States and speak English

Stroke Patients Wanted for Walking Study

In this study, participants receive 8-10 weeks of gait training on the Lokomat, a robotic-assisted treadmill, or conventional gait training. Transportation costs will be provided. We invite adults who:

  • have had a single-sided stroke within the past six months
  • are able to walk 15 feet (with a walking device if necessary)
  • are not receiving therapy targeting function in lower limb
  • have no serious cognitive or communication impairments
  • reside in the metropolitan D.C. area
