We are currently seeking adults with hemiparesis and foot drop as a result of a stroke for a comparative study of the Walkaide (Functional Electrical Stimulation) and an ankle-foot orthosis. The study consists of a 90-minute computerized test of cognitive and motor tasks. Monetary compensation will be provided.

To be eligible, a participant should meet the following criteria:

  • be age 18 or older
  • have had a stroke within the last 365 days
  • be medically stable for 6 months prior to your most recent stroke
  • have inadequate dorsiflexion resulting in inadequate limb clearance
  • be medically cleared by attending physician
  • be able to walk with or without an assistive device for at least 10 meters

  • be age 18 or older
  • have had a stroke within the last 30 days
  • be able to stand for at least one minute with maximal assistance or less

PROTECT DC: Preventing Recurrence of Thromboembolic Events Through Coordinated Treatment in the District of Columbia

PROTECT DC seeks to reduce the recurrence of stroke among stroke survivors through the assistance of a Stroke Navigator. (A navigator is a community health worker trained to “navigate” the health care system.) The Stroke Navigator will assist patients with medication management, diet and exercise plans, and other behaviors proven to reduce the risk of stroke.

To be eligible, a participant should meet the following criteria:

  • be age 18 or older
  • have had a stroke or TIA within the past 30 days
  • currently hospitalized due to an ischemic stroke or TIA
  • live in the D.C. area

I-CARE (Interdisciplinary Comprehensive Arm Rehabilitation Evaluation) Study

We are conducting a study to determine how therapy helps to improve arm and hand function within 1 to 3 months after a stroke.

To be eligible, a participant should meet the following criteria:

  • have had a stroke within the past three months
  • have demonstrated upper-extremity motor impairments
  • be able to follow simple commands
  • have no prior upper-extremity problems
  • have no ataxia, neglect or severe pain in the upper extremity

For more information on participating in this study, please contact Lori Monroe at 202-877-1922 or Lori.Monroe@MedStar.net

    Assistive Technology & Mobility Study

We are investigating the impact of recent changes in policy regarding wheelchairs, including how many functional wheelchairs an individual owns.

To be eligible, a participant should meet the following criteria:

    • be age 18 or older
    • have had a spinal cord injury (any level) for at least 12 months
    • not be ambulatory
