Stroke Rehabilitation
Stroke, or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the the leading cause of disability and the third most common cause of death in the United States. However, more people are surviving stroke because of advances in medicine and technology and, in turn, are able to benefit from stroke rehabilitation care.
At NRH, persons with stroke receive a comprehensive range of services that emphasize functional independence and prevention of recurrent strokes. Medical care is managed by specialists who are board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and/or Neurology.
NRH is the only facility in the Washington, DC-Northern Virginia area to receive the highest level of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). We received this three-year designation by developing a comprehensive program which addresses all phases of stroke rehabilitation.
These services, administered by a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, case managers and therapists, include:
- Assessment of the patient’s physical abilities, cognitive and communication skills, psychosocial functioning, daily living skills, and vocational and leisure capabilities
- Development, with patient and family involvement, of an individualized treatment plan
- Application of rehabilitation technology, such as functional electrical stimulation, body-weight-supported gait training. biofeedback, state-of-the-art bracing technologies and computer-assisted retraining
- Patient and family education regarding the patient’s level of function, the nature and effects of stroke, prevention of recurrent strokes, and ongoing care of the patient
- Patient and family support through counseling, pastoral care services and support groups
- Close association with other area medical services and community agencies and groups
- Comprehensive continued care planning
