Children’s Rehabilitation Thanks to advances in modern medicine, children are surviving injuries and illnesses today which 10 years ago would have taken their life. But, will they be as active and capable as they were before the accident? What about recurring health problems?
Parents instinctively want the best care for their children. That is why National Rehabilitation Hospital partnered with Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC) to open the National Center for Children’s Rehabilitation (NCCR) at NRH. The Center treats children ages 6 and up.
CNMC, opened in 1870, has nationally recognized expertise in specialty and tertiary pediatric inpatient and outpatient diagnosis and treatment as well as a highly regarded staff of specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics and pediatric medicine.
Care at NCCR is individualized to allow for each patient to reach his or her own maximum level of growth and development. Treatment is specifically structured to reduce disability, prevent secondary complications, and focus on therapy designed to enhance the potential for an active return to family, school, and community.
The program may include:
- aquatic therapy
- seating and mobility training
- evaluation for assistive technology
- self-care and home management training
- discharge planning for home, school and community re-entry
Facilities
Children are not merely “little adults.” Therefore, our architects and clinical design specialists created a secure, dedicated unit tailored for the unique needs of children and their parents.
Care is delivered in a fanciful, stimulating setting with playrooms, schoolrooms, and accommodations for parents to stay overnight with their children.
National Rehabilitation Hospital offers an ideal setting for recovery. Independence Square® is designed to teach patients the skills needed for independent living in a simulated, “real world” community environment. Aquatic therapy is offered in a warm and inviting pool. The Therapeutic Garden with its Victory of Human Spirit sculpture fountain offers opportunities for daily therapy as well as a place where patients can relax with family and friends. The multi-purpose fitness court and playground, located beside the Hospital, has been thoughtfully designed to be fully accessible to children of all abilities. |
