The Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Program at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington DC offers inpatient services for individuals with a variety of conditions. Care focuses on restoring a patient’s highest level of function.
A hallmark of the program is early intervention following injury or surgery, which helps ensure a speedier and more positive recovery.

The MedStar NRH Continuum of Care
Before discharging a patient, we will recommend services the patient will need in order to transition to the next level of care. This might include Outpatient Services through the MedStar NRH Rehabilitation Network. We also offer access to skilled nursing facilities and home care through the MedStar Visiting Nurse Association. Our job is to build a roadmap for your recovery — and to support you along the journey as you rebuild your life.
Team Highlights
- Robert Bunning, MD is Clinical Director of the Orthopaedic Program. Dr. Bunning was named a "Top Doctor" for 2012 by Washingtonian magazine.
- Amelia Warner, RN is Co-Director of the Orthopaedic Program.
- The patient’s team will include: a physician team leader, rehabilitation nursing, social worker/case manager, physical therapist and occupational therapist.
- A patient might also work with a psychologist, speech language pathologist, therapeutic recreation specialist, wound care specialist, vocational counselor, rehabilitation engineering specialist, orthotic and/or prosthetic specialist and dietician.
- Spiritual care services are also available.

- Specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation, orthopaedic surgery, internal medicine, and Rheumatology will manage the patient’s care.
- The program uses the most technologically advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment

- Prostheses and orthotics are manufactured and fitted onsite

- Other services include skin care, aquatic therapy, pain management, and work-related assistance.
- Our Arm Amputee Program addresses the specific physical, psychosocial, and functional needs of people who have suffered arm loss

- Our engineers can create adaptive equipment to assist in activities of daily living and recreation

- Walking therapy using the robotic ZeroG Support System is available.
