On March 23, 2007 at National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC, the NRH Speech-Language Pathology Service presents "Current Clinical Practice in Dysphagia: Evaluation and Treatment in Adults"-- their 20th annual continuing education workshop.

Guest speaker Donna Tippett (M.P.H., M.A., CCC-SLP) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Ms. Tippett -- a speech language pathologist for over 20 years -- has provided direct clinical services to adults in acute inpatient, rehabilitation, and outpatient settings. She has presented nationally and locally on the topic of communication and swallowing disorders and has published in peer-reviewed journals. She has also edited the book Tracheostomy and Ventilator Dependency: Management of Breathing, Speaking, and Swallowing, published by Thieme, 2000.

Course Objectives

As a result of participating in this course, the learner will be able to:

• Describe and debate evidence for intervention strategies to address dysphagia
• Explain controversies in the evaluation and treatment of dysphagia
• Implement current and evidence based evaluation and treatment approaches in the management of dysphagia

Course Abstract
This workshop is designed to prepare and update speech-language pathologists to evaluate and treat swallowing disorders in
adults. The philosophy and specifics of clinical and instrumental assessment will be reviewed briefly. The importance of assessing the esophagus during the videofluoroscopic swallowing study will be addressed. Evidence to support the use of oral motor exercises and compensatory strategies will be examined as well as the advantages and limitations of diet modifications. Current clinical issues, including aspiration pneumonia, contributing risk factors, oral hygiene care, and decision making regarding oral intake, will be presented. Clinical controversies will be discussed. The course will conclude with an interactive case presentation, allowing participants to apply workshop content and principles of evidence based practice.

Continuing Education Credits
Application has been made to the Maryland Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists for 6.0 continuing education units. The National Rehabilitation Hospital Speech-Language Pathology Service is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association (ASHA) to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology.
