Sports & Recreation
Exercise and physical activity are often inaccessible and overlooked by individuals with disabilities, especially those that use wheelchairs for mobility. A lack of daily physical activity and routine exercise produces a higher risk for skin breakdowns, osteoporosis, chronic pain, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.
The benefits of exercise and physical activity for individuals with disabilities include:
- Increased energy and endurance
- Stronger muscles
- Weight loss
- Fights depression
Wheelchair sports are a fun and competitive way to achieve these benefits!

About NRH BlazeSports
NRH's Sports & Recreation program is part of BlazeSports America, a national organization dedicated to maximizing the potential of people with disabilities through sports. Introduced in 1998, the organization works to assure that opportunities to grow and develop through sports training and competition and ongoing active lifestyles become as readily available for children and adults with physical disability as they currently are for non-disabled Americans.
Currently, the NRH chapter offers weekly programs in basketball, tennis and rugby. For more information, please call the Therapeutic Recreation Team at 202.877.1420. |
