Paralympic Sport Clubs Receive Grant from BP at Team USA Experience

Local Paralympic Sport Clubs received a $15,000 grant from BP North America, Inc., at its Team USA Experience event Tuesday, June 26, outside of Union Station in Washington, D.C. The Team USA Experience focused on the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Those who attended got to experience activities such as a wheelchair race interactive video game and Olympic-style events such as a10-meter sprint, shot put and discus. Participants also got to meet Chris Waddell, a 13-time Paralympic medalist and the most decorated male mono-skier in Paralympic history.

John Rockwood, president of MedStar National Rehabilitation Network, accepted a check on behalf of Paralympic Sport Washington, a program of MedStar National Rehabilitation Network, and Paralympic Sport Club Mid-Atlantic, of Baltimore Adapted Recreation and Sports. The money supports wheelchair basketball, handcycling, quad rugby, sled hockey and more.

"Our adaptive sports programs help those with disabilities get reacclimated with the community and stay active despite the challenges they face," said Rockwood.
